Historical Options Data — Frequently Asked Questions
What is NSE historical options data and how is it useful?
NSE historical options data consists of daily end-of-day snapshots of all
listed options contracts on NSE — including open interest (OI), traded quantity,
premium value, number of trades, and derived metrics. By studying this data over time, options traders
can identify where institutional money has been consistently building or unwinding positions at specific
strike prices, understand expiry dynamics, and track how OI evolves across contract lifespans.
How do I analyze CE and PE historical OI together on NSE?
Our scanner plots CE (Call) and PE (Put) OI changes side by side as grouped bar charts
over the last 80 trading days for the selected strike. Rising CE OI at a strike price indicates call
writers are adding fresh short positions (acts as resistance). Rising PE OI shows put
writers are adding (acts as support). When CE OI falls sharply, call writers are
covering (short covering — bullish signal). The interplay between CE and PE OI history is one of the
most reliable indicators of institutional positioning in NSE F&O.
What is the difference between OPTIDX and OPTSTK?
OPTIDX covers index options — Nifty 50, Bank Nifty, Nifty Midcap Select,
Nifty Financial Services (FinNifty), and Sensex. These are settled in cash and are the most
liquid instruments in NSE's F&O segment, dominated by institutional and HNI participants.
OPTSTK covers individual stock options for F&O-eligible companies. Stock
options tend to have lower liquidity but can show very concentrated institutional activity around
corporate events, earnings, and sector themes.
Which metric should I track in historical options data?
- OPEN_INT — Raw open interest in contracts. Use to identify absolute positioning levels.
- OPEN_INT_CHG — Daily change in OI. Positive = new positions added; negative = positions closed.
- OI_CHG_PR_VAL_PER_TRADE — OI change per unit of premium value traded. High = institutional fresh positions.
- TRD_QTY — Total traded quantity. Use to filter high-activity strikes.
- NO_OF_TRADE — Number of trades. High trades + low OI change = retail churning.
- PR_VAL — Premium value (₹ crores). Shows absolute money flow into the contract.
What does "Monthly Expiry Only" filter do?
NSE introduced weekly options expiries for major indices. The Monthly Expiry Only
toggle filters expiry dates to show only the last Thursday of each month — the traditional monthly
expiry. Monthly contracts typically carry the highest open interest and are preferred for
positional analysis. Disable this filter to also see weekly expiries, which are useful for
short-term options strategies and delta-neutral trades.
What does Gross Aggregation show vs Day Wise data?
Day Wise data reflects the net end-of-day position — the difference between
opening and closing OI for that trading session. It shows overnight position changes.
Gross Aggregation (GROSS_ columns) sums up all buy and sell transactions
including intraday squaroffs. A high gross but low day-wise OI change means a lot of intraday
activity with minimal overnight carry — typical of retail or algorithmic day-trading. High gross
OI change matching day-wise change indicates strong directional conviction with overnight holding.
How does Nifty 50 option chain history relate to Sensex index today?
The historical nse option chain open interest (OI) trends for Nifty 50 and BankNifty options are excellent barometers of institutional sentiment.
Because large institutions trade across both nse bse exchanges, Nifty option writing historical patterns directly influence constituent stock prices, which in turn move the sensex index today.
Options traders also watch early-morning global flows on sgx live to verify if historical support/resistance levels will hold or break on opening.
